Concrete placers supported by range of new initiatives

mcpalogo-w-tagline-with-copyrightMembers of the New Zealand Master Concrete Placers Association (NZMCPA) are being kept up to date with the latest good practice advice across a range of concrete placing topics, thanks to new initiatives introduced by the Association this year.

Specifically, this has involved the distribution of a re-designed On The Level newsletter, Placing In Practice leaflets and Good Reads e-alert.

“These simple and engaging communications are designed to keep members informed of industry matters, summarise accepted concrete placing practice, and highlight various online publications that are worth consulting,” says NZMCPA President, Brad Robertson.

He says the Placing in Practice series of leaflets correspond to the changing seasons, offering tips and tricks covering cold, wet and hot weather concreting, to ensure costly mistakes are avoided to the benefit of both the concrete placer and the client.

“Simple advice on how to create an exposed aggregate finish is also covered, along with the importance of correct curing procedures,” says Brad.

The Good Reads e-alert is proving extremely popular with members, as it points them in the direction of helpful online publications and articles without them having to do the time consuming initial research themselves.

“The internet is literally overflowing with information, so it can be difficult to figure out what is relevant.  The NZMPCA has taken the time to identify a range of online publications that contain concrete placing and more general industry information of direct use to our members’ day-to-day work.”

From the recent Health & Safety At Work Act through to managing client expectations in terms of their new concrete driveway the Good Reads e-alerts “point members in the right direction,” he adds.

In addition to the distribution of ‘good practice’ material, NZMCPA supports its members through a range of other information based mechanisms such as road-shows, a website forum, and an annual conference.

“NZMCPA seeks to support and educate members towards producing a consistently high standard of work and to conduct themselves in a professional manner.  In so doing, the reputation of those working in the concrete contracting sector will be enhanced.”

Brad says in addition to its own annual conference, it has become customary for the NZMCPA to join other concrete industry associations every second year in a ‘combined’ conference.

This year’s New Zealand Concrete Industry Conference was held in early October in Auckland, and featured a number of dedicated NZMCPA sessions, covering matters such as health & safety, along with concrete placing and finishing.

Members were also free to attend a host of other sessions ranging in focus from exemplar projects through to concrete material science.

“The annual conference in the alternate biennial years is a combined event with the New Zealand Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association (NZCSDA).

The 2017 event will be held in Christchurch during August.  Planning is already well underway, and the event is shaping up to be informative and entertaining,” says Brad.
