“Like many suppliers to the trade sector the hire industry is in growth mode, aided by the construction boom,” says HIANZ CEO, Phil Tindle.
“There are always pockets in regions that will be a little quieter as they may be more reliant on what local government is doing in terms of roading infrastructure. The hire industry is typically in growth mode regardless of market conditions. As an industry we are always looking for new opportunities as far as equipment is concerned, to add to our customer offering. In that respect there is growth happening all the time.”
HIANZ represents the general hire and access hire industries in New Zealand, which cater predominantly for the DIY market, tradespeople and contractors.
“Our members also operate in a lot of niche hire markets, and we have a significant representation of companies involved in the Party and Event hire sector,” says Phil.
The Hire Industry Association of New Zealand has been meeting the needs of its broad membership base for 38 years.
It was founded during the 1970s when a group of interested parties including independent hire owners and suppliers, got together in New Plymouth to form what has become one of the more influential trade groups in New Zealand.
Many of those founder members are still involved in HIANZ, with their knowledge, experience and commitment supporting the Association’s ongoing development.
The mission of HIANZ is simple – to collectively represent the hire and rental industry, by using the strength and diversity of its membership. It also aims to be advocates of fair play and sustainable business growth through education, training and development.
Today the Association’s members consist of hire companies and industry suppliers split into three geographical zones, Hamilton to Northland, Hamilton to Wellington, and the South Island.
Phil says networking is by far the most significant benefit to members.
“We encourage our members to participate in all activities and initiatives, as this leads to the opportunity to network with industry peers, initiate discussions, compare key areas of their businesses, and build lifelong friendships.”
Providing regular communication to members is a key focus of HIANZ, along with promoting the association and industry to the wider market.
HIANZ publishes a twice-yearly glossy magazine, New Zealand Hire & Rental, and sends out a regular email newsletter to provide the latest industry news and reminders.
“We also have a comprehensive website which provides an overview of the association, as well as details about our upcoming events, activities and training programmes.”
Phil says lobbying to local and national government on its members’ behalf is another important aspect of its work.
“Our industry has a diverse range of product and therefore needs a strong and compelling voice when it comes to legislative matters affecting it.”
He says the primary aim of the Association is to safeguard and provide strong advocacy and lobbying resources to ensure HIANZ members continue to benefit from a trading environment that allows them to get on with business.
